Barrel length 24"; caliber .38 rimfire. Markings: "BALL & WILLIAMS/Worcester, Mass." and "BALLARD'S PATENT/Nov. 5, 1861" on octagonal barrel. Distinctive feature of earliest production of Ballard rifles is presence of internal extractor conforming to patent specifications. After approximately 100 rifles, this feature was dropped in favor of a manual extractor located under the barrel.
