Ballard (Brown Mfg. Co.) Full-Stock Military Rifles

Overall length 52.5"; barrel (bore) length 30"; caliber .46 rimfire. Markings: same as Brown Mfg. Co. sporting rifles, with addition of caliber marking, "No. 46", on top of barrel forward of rear sight. Cause for production of Ballard/Brown military rifle has yet to be determined, but it has been speculated that they were possibly manufactured in anticipation of a sale to France during Franco-Prussian War. In any event, sale was not culminated and many, if not most, of estimated 1,000 produced were "sporterized" by shortening fore-stock and sold by commercial dealers in United States. Serial numbers concentrate in 20,500 through 21,600 range, with sporting rifles interspersed in the sequence. Rifles that have not been sporterized command a premium.
