Breechloading ("Rising Breech") Carbine

Overall length 40"; barrel length 21"; caliber 54. Markings: either "P" or "P/CS" on upper left side of barrel and top of rising breech. Peculiar feature of this carbine is manner in which breech-block exposes chamber. A box-like chamber at rear of barrel rises vertically to expose chamber for a paper cartridge by activating lever/trigger-guard mechanism. Only 100 of this type were delivered to Confederacy in September 1862. Two types of front sight blades are known, but neither affects value. Very rare confederate arm. Values are speculative.
