During 1862 and 1863, Read & Watson produced approximately 900 altered Hall rifles for State of Virginia. These arms were made from Hall rifles issued to the state prior to the Civil War. Original breech-loading mechanisms were removed and a brass breech piece or receiver was secured in their place. New buttstocks were fitted and original Hall furniture was reused. Carbines have an overall length of 42.125"; barrel length 26"; in .52-caliber. Position and style of serial numbers varies.
