Breech-loading .44-caliber percussion rifle, with 30" barrel having a wooden cleaning rod mounted beneath it. Breech activated by the trigger guard lever. There is an automatic disk-type capping device on right side of receiver. Finish blued and case colored. Stock is walnut, with a brass patchbox, buttplate and fore-end cap. Marked "Sharps Patent 1848". Approximately 200 manufactured in 1849 and 1850 by A.S. Nippes Company.
