Vest Pocket Pistol
Courtesy Milwaukee Public Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Single-shot pocket pistol. Chambered for .22 and .30 rimfire cartridges. The .22-caliber version is rarely encountered and would be worth approximately 25 percent more than values illustrated. Has a 2.75" part-octagonal barrel that pivots upward for loading, external hammer and spur-type trigger. Frame nickel-plated or blued, with blued barrel. Odd shaped flared-grips are made of rosewood. First models marked "Vest Pocket Pistol" only. Later models have barrels marked "J. Stevens & Co. Chicopee Falls, Mass.". Approximately 1,000 manufactured between 1864 and 1876.
