Ruger's entry into the "wonder-nine" market. While it was announced in 1985, it was 1987 before it went into production. The first of a series of "P" model Ruger pistols, which remained in production through 2013. Also, first Ruger firearm manufactured at Prescott, Arizona plant. A very successful moderately priced double-action high-capacity 9mm pistol, at a time when law enforcement and much of the civilian market was embracing this type of pistol. Original model had a matte black finish, black synthetic grips, alloy frame and steel slide. Other features were 4.5" barrel, fixed three-dot sights and ambidextrous safety. Note: As of 2013, all P-series pistols had been discontinued.
