TEXAS CONTRACT RIFLES
Three contractors produced rifles for the State of Texas during 1862 and 1863. One of these patterns has a sporting back-action lock, Enfield barrel bands, an overall length of 47.375", heavy 32" long barrel of .58-caliber. Total deliveries by all contractors amounted to 1,464 rifles. Quality of these arms was decidedly inferior and often complained about. Contracting makers included Short Biscoe & Co. (only one rifle completed), Whitescarver Campbell & Co., Billups & Hassall, Tyler Ordnance Works (see separate listing) and N.B. Tanner & Co. As with all Confederate arms, expert authentication is essential. Sales are so rare as to make value estimates impractical. Burley Auction reported the sale of a Billups & Hassall for $9,000 in 2019.
