Revolving Carbines

A variety of revolving carbines were made by this maker. Nearly all of which are .40-caliber, with octagonal barrels measuring 20" to 24" in length. Most commonly encountered variations are listed.

Manually Revolved Grooved Cylinder

Fitted with two triggers, one of which is a release so that cylinder can be manually turned. Not fitted with a loading lever. Top strap marked "James Warner/Springfield, Mass.". Approximately 75 made in 1849.

Retractable Cylinder Model

This version has a cylinder that fits over the breech and it must be retracted before it can be manually rotated. Cylinder release is a button located in front of the trigger. It is marked "James Warner/Springfield Mass" and with an eagle over letters "U.S.". Cylinder is etched and there is no loading lever. Has a walnut stock, with patchbox and no forearm. Approximately 25 manufactured in 1849.

Automatic Revolving Cylinder

Cylinder is automatically turned when hammer is cocked. Fitted with loading lever. Marked "Warner's Patent/Jan. 1851" and "Springfield Arms Co.". Approximately 200 made during 1850s.
