Excelsior

Single-shot rifle chambered for .38, .44 or .50 rimfire cartridges. Found with various length octagonal or round barrels. Finish blued, with walnut stock. Forearm held on by one barrel band. Breech-block pivots downward for loading. There is a center-mounted hammer. Marked "Whitney Arms Co. Whitneyville Conn.". Shorter barreled carbine versions have a saddle ring on the frame. Approximately 200 manufactured between 1866 and 1870.
