Whitney M1855 Rifle Derivative
At the same time Whitney advertised his Enfield derivative series of rifle-muskets and rifles, he also indicated the availability of a short rifle with saber bayonet. This rifle combined rejected barrels (made at Harpers Ferry in 1858 for U.S. M1855 rifles), with rejected unmilled Maynard tape primer lockplates that had been shaved of their top "hump", marked forward of hammer with single line stamp, "E. WHITNEY". Buttplate and trigger guard also conform to U.S. M1855 rifle, but bands are brass remaining from Whitney's M1841/1855 rifle contract. Early in production, these rifles used round brass lock screw washers following M1855 pattern; later production used winged brass lock screw washers that Whitney inherited from Robbins & Lawrence P1853 rifle-musket contract, which he used on his Enfield series derivatives. At least two patterns of saber bayonet were used on this rifle.
