Model 40

Represents Winchester's second attempt to build a self-loading long recoil-operated repeating shotgun. This shotgun was a hammerless tubular magazine gun, without the hump at rear of the receiver. Available in 12-gauge only, with barrel lengths from 28" to 30". Standard Grade had plain walnut pistol-grip stock and fore-end; Skeet Grade fitted with select walnut checkered pistol-grip stock and checkered fore-end. Model 40 suffered from the same design problems as Model 11. Introduced in 1940; discontinued in 1941. About 12,000 sold.
