Model 1848 Baby Dragoon
A small 5-shot .31-caliber percussion revolver. An octagonal barrel in lengths of 3", 4", 5" and 6". Most were made without an attached loading lever, although some with loading levers have been noted. Frame, hammer and loading lever (when present) are case colored; barrel and cylinder blued. Grip frame and trigger guard are silver-plated brass. Approximately 15,500 manufactured between 1847 and 1850. Serial range is between 1-15500. Barrels are stamped "Address Saml. Colt/New York City". Some have been noted with the barrel address inside brackets. Frame is marked "Colt's/Patent". First 10,000 revolvers have Texas Ranger/Indian roll-engraved cylinder scene; later guns stagecoach holdup scene. This is a popular model and many fakes have been noted. NOTE: Add 15 percent for attached loading lever.
