"Root", as it's popularly known, was the only solid-frame revolver Colt ever made. It has a spur trigger, walnut grips and hammer mounted on right side of frame. Standard finish is a case colored frame, hammer and loading lever, with barrel and cylinder blued. Chambered for both .28-caliber and .31-caliber percussion. Each caliber has its own serial number range—1-30000 for .28-caliber; 1-14000 for .31-caliber. Model consists of seven basic variations. Serious student should avail himself of the fine publications dealing with this model in depth. Colt produced Side Hammer Root from 1855-1870.
