Conversion of these two revolver models is the most difficult to catalog of all Colt variations. Approximately 24,000 of these produced between 1873 and 1880. There are five basic variations, with a number of sub-variations. Confusion is usually caused by different ways in which these were marked. Depending upon what parts were utilized, caliber markings could be particularly confusing. One must also consider the fact that many of these conversion revolvers found their way into secondary markets, such as Mexico, Central and South America. They were either destroyed or received sufficient abuse to obliterate most identifying markings. Five basic variations are all chambered for .38 rimfire or centerfire cartridge. All held 5-shots. Most were found with round roll-engraved stagecoach holdup scene. Half-fluted cylinder from 1862 Police is quite rare on the conversion revolver and not found at all on some of the variations. Finishes on these guns were pretty much the same as they were before conversion, but not unusual to find nickel-plated specimens. Basic variations are listed.
