Standard Production Pre-war Models (1899-1940)

The 1899 cutoff has been thoroughly discussed, but it is interesting to note that the actual beginning production date for smokeless models was 1900. Pre-war Colts, all in all, are quite similar to the antiques—finishes, barrel lengths, grips, etc. Calibers are also similar, with the exception of obsolete ones being dropped and new discoveries added. Most apparent physical difference between smokeless-powder and black-powder models is previously discussed method of retaining the cylinder axis pin. Pre-war Colts utilized the spring-loaded button through side of the frame. Black-powder models utilized a screw in front of the frame. Values we furnish for this model designation are for these standard models only. Serial number range on pre-war SAAs is 175001-357859. Any variation can have marked effects on value fluctuations.
