Pistol is identical in outward physical configuration to .45 ACP Colt Commercial. Chambered for .38 Super cartridge. Magazine holds 9 rounds. Right side of slide marked "Colt Super .38 Automatic" in two lines, followed by "Rampant Colt". Last few thousand pre-war Super .38 pistols made, had Swartz Safety parts installed. Some pistols were assembled post-war, with leftover parts. Post-war-assembled pistols did not have Swartz safeties installed but most (possibly all) had the cutouts. In 1945, 400 pistols were purchased by the U.S. Government. These 400 pistols bear the G.H.D. acceptance mark as well as Ordnance crossed cannons. (G.H.D. and Ordnance marked add 30-50 percent. A factory letter is probably necessary here.) Some collectors feel that post-war assembly and post-war chemical tank bluing adds a premium, others feel that it requires a deduction. NOTE: Add 33 percent for finish 99-100 percent; 20 percent for Swartz Safeties; 50 percent for nickel finish.
