Newark, New Jersey
Founded in 1856, Manhattan was a significant American handgun maker for about two decades, producing over 150,000 handguns, mainly copies of other makers such as percussion pocket single-shot pistols, pepperboxes, Colt-style percussion revolvers (following the expiration of Colt’s patent), and S&W-style tip-up .22 rimfire spur-trigger revolvers. The successor company, American Standard Tool, lasted 1868 to 1873.
