.38 Special. This model has been in production in one configuration or another since 1899. It was always the mainstay of S&W line. Originally known as .38 Military and Police Model. The Model 10 is built on the K, or medium frame, and was always meant as a duty gun. Offered with 2-, 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-in. barrel. Currently only 4 and 6 in. are available. Round or square butt, chambered for .38 S&W Special. Offered in blue or nickel-plate, with checkered walnut grips. Model designation stamped on yoke on all S&W revolvers. The model 10, with many other modern S&W pistols, underwent 14 engineering changes. These changes may affect value of the revolver, and an expert should be consulted.

.38 S&W. First produced in 1947, S&W received many contracts for this service pistol. Nicknamed .38/200 British Service Revolver. S&W sold many of these models throughout 1950s and 1960s. Several rare variations of this model will greatly affect its value. Consult an expert if special markings and barrel lengths are encountered. Four known engineering changes. Never cataloged.

Chambered for .38 S&W Special. Fitted with 4-in. barrel. Grips are S&W checkered target. Adjustable rear sight. Offered in nickel or color case-hardened.

.38 Special. Model 12 was introduced in 1952. Starting serial number C223999. Merely a Model 10, with lightweight alloy frame and cylinder. In 1954, alloy cylinder was replaced with one of steel that added an additional 4 oz. in weight. Discontinued in 1986. Note: Add 40% for aluminum cylinder. Four known engineering changes.

Simply a Model 10 M&P fitted with a heavy barrel and chambered for .357 Magnum. Introduced in 1974. Discontinued in 1999. Blued finish. Five Engineering changes. Large Premium for very rare U.S. Air Force model.

A Lew Horton exclusive. Features a 3-in. barrel with 4 Mag-Na-Ports, a bobbed hammer for double-action-only, chambered charge holes, beveled cylinder, contoured grip and thumb latch for speed loader clearance, overtravel trigger stop and FBI grips. Identical to Model 14 Classic, except with 4" barrel.

Also known as "K-32" until 1957. Identical in appearance to the Model 14, except chambered for .32 S&W. Model 16 did not enjoy the commercial popularity like the Model 14 and was dropped from the line in 1973. Only 3,630 K-32s/Model 16s were sold between 1947-1973. Introduced in 1996. New version of old Model 17. Has a 10-round aluminum cylinder for its .22 LR cartridges. Features 6-in. full-lug barrel, with Patridge front sight and adjustable rear. Hammer is semi-target-style and trigger a smooth combat style. Finish matte black and grips are Hogue black rubber. Drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Weight about 42 oz. Discontinued 1999.

Numerical designation S&W placed on the "K-22" in 1957. Target model .22 rimfire revolver popular since its introduction in 1946. Offered in 4-, 6- and 8.375-in. barrel lengths, with all target options. The 8.375" barrel dropped from the product line in 1993. Finish blued, with checkered walnut grips. Introduced in 1954 at the urging of Bill Jordan, a competition shooter with U.S. Border Patrol. He went on to become a respected gun writer. Built on "K-Frame" and was first medium frame revolver chambered for powerful .357 Magnum cartridge. Since its inception, Model 19 has been one of S&W's most popular revolvers. First revolver to be introduced as a four-screw model. Originally offered with 4-in. heavy barrel with extractor shroud; the 6 in. became available in 1963. Finish blued or nickel plated. Grips are checkered walnut. Goncalo Alves target stocks first appeared in 1959. In 1968, a 2.5-in. round butt version was introduced. Model 19 has been basis for many commemoratives, including Texas Ranger/with Bowie Knife and Oregon State Police/with Belt Buckle. Discontinued 1999. Eight engineering changes.

Known as ".38/.44 Heavy Duty" before the change to numerical designations. This model was brought out in 1930, in response to requests from law enforcement personnel for a more powerful sidearm. This model, along with the .38-44 S&W Special cartridge, was an attempt to solve this problem. It was manufactured with a standard 5-in. long barrel but has been noted rarely as short as 3.5 in. and as long as 8.375 in. Built on the large N-frame. Blued or nickel-plated, with checkered walnut grips. Eventually the popularity of the .357 Magnum made the Model 20 superfluous and it was discontinued in 1966. Numbered model specimens are scarcer than pre-Model Heavy Duties. Total post-war production was about 20,000 revolvers. Two engineering changes.

Half-moon clips are used with the latter. Estimated that around 178 Model-marked guns were made between 1957-1966 in the serial range of S185000-S263000. Two Engineering changes. .38 Special. The ".38-44 Outdoorsman" was the model name of this N-frame revolver before the 1957 designation change. Simply Model 20, with adjustable sights. Introduced in 1931, as a heavy-duty sporting handgun with hunters in mind. S&W produced 4,761 of these pre-war revolvers. Features 6.5-in. barrel. Blued finish. First S&W to have the new checkered walnut "Magna" grips. After 1949, this revolver was thoroughly modernized and had the later ribbed barrel. A total of 8,365 manufactured before it was discontinued in 1966; 6,039 were of the modernized configuration. Numbered model specimens are scarcer than pre-Model Outdoorsmen. .44 Special. Introduced as the .44 Target Model of 1950. Simply the N-frame Model 21, with adjustable target sights. Quite popular with long-range hand gunning devotees and their leader, Elmer Keith. Introduction of .44 Magnum in 1956, began the death knell of Model 24. Finally discontinued in 1966. S&W produced a total of 5,050 Model 24s. Numerical designation of 1950 .45 Target Model. This large N-frame revolver is basically the same as Model 25, but has a lighter, thinner barrel. This caused its unpopularity among competitive shooters who wanted a heavier revolver. This brought about Model 25 and the demise of Model 26, in 1961. Manufactured only 2,768.

Introduced in 1988/1989. 45 Colt Supplied with 5-in. barrel. Total production of 802 guns. Known Serial numbers BBY00354-BBY0434.Original Retail Introductory Price: $405.

.357 Magnum. In 1948, after the end of WWII, production of this revolver again commenced with a new rebound slide-operated hammer block and short throw hammer were utilized. Barrel lengths offered were 3.5, 5, 6, 6.5 and 8.375 in. In 1957, model designation was changed to Model 27. In 1975, target trigger, hammer and Goncalo Alves target grips were made standard. Some additional variations may be of interest to the collector. Around serial number SI71584, the three-screw sideplate model was first produced. In 1960, designation -1 was added to model indicating change to a left hand thread to extractor rod. In 1962, cylinder stop was changed which disposed the need for a plunger spring hole in front of triggerguard. Change was indicated by a -2 behind model number. .357 Magnum, N-Frame. The Model 27 revolver was extremely popular among law enforcement officers. Many police agencies were interested in purchasing such a weapon — except for cost. In 1954, S&W produced a new model called at the time, "Highway Patrolman". It had all desirable performance features of deluxe Model 27, but lacked cosmetic features that drove up price. Finish matte blue; rib sandblasted instead of checkered or serrated; grips standard checkered walnut. Barrel lengths 4 and 6.5 in. On late models, 6.5-in. barrel reduced to 6 in., as on all S&Ws. Designation changed to Model 28 in 1957. S&W discontinued the Model 28 in 1986. Note: 3 engineering changes.

Early 1950s, handgun writers under leadership of Elmer Keith, were in the habit of loading .44 Special cartridge to high performance levels and firing them in existing .44 Hand Ejectors. They urged S&W to produce a revolver strong enough to consistently fire these heavy loads. In 1954, Remington at the request of S&W, produced .44 Magnum cartridge which were longer so that they would not fit in chambers of older .44 Special guns. First .44 Magnum became available for sale in early 1955. First 500 were made with 6.5-in. barrel; 4 in. became available later that year. In 1957, model designation was changed to 29 and 8.375-in. barrel was introduced. Available in blue or nickel-plate. Came standard with all target options. Offered in a fitted wood case. Model 29 is considered by many knowledgeable people to be the finest revolver S&W has ever produced. Older Model 29 revolvers are in a different collector category than most modern S&W revolvers. Early four-screw models can be worth 100% premium in excellent condition. These early models were produced from 1956 to 1958. Approximately 6,500 were sold. One must regard these revolvers on a separate basis and have them individually appraised for proper valuation. In 1993, the 4-in. barrel dropped from production. 10 Engineering changes with multiple variations. Rare 5-in. barrel will bring 3X to 5X standard values for Model 29, 29-1, and 29-2. Among the numerous variations and limited editions are the Silhouette, Classic, Classic DX, and Magna Classic. These will bring varying premiums similar to the premiums for comparable variations of the Model 629 stainless steel .44 Magnum.

.32 S&W. Built on the small I-frame. Based on .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903. This older model was dropped from production in 1942. Reintroduced in 1949, in a more modern version but still referred to as .32 Hand Ejector. In 1957, model designation was changed to Model 30. In 1960, this frame size was dropped and J-frame, which had been in use since 1950, became standard for Model 30. S&W stamped -1 behind the model number to designate this important change in frame size. Chambered for .32 S&W Long cartridge. Has a 6-shot cylinder and 2-, 3-, 4- and 6-in. barrel lengths. Fixed sights and blued or nickel-plated. Butt is round, with checkered walnut grips. Discontinued in 1976. One engineering change.

.32 S&W. Same as Model 30, with a square butt. It was known as .32 Regulation Police before 1957. Discontinued 1991. Three engineering changes.

.38 S&W. Known as Terrier prior to 1957, was introduced in 1936. Essentially a .38 Regulation Police chambered for .38 S&W, with 2" barrel and round butt. Like Model 30 and 31, this revolver was originally built on I-frame, which was changed to J-frame in 1960. The -1 behind model number signifies this change. Offered in blue or nickel-plate. Has a 5-shot cylinder, fixed sights and checkered walnut grips. Discontinued in 1974. One engineering change.

A limited production version with alloy frame and steel cylinder was produced as Model 032 chambered in .32 H&R Magnum. Thought to be cosmetically flawed model 632. 6-shot cylinder, add 30%.

.38 S&W. Simply the .38 Regulation Police, with a square butt and 4-in. barrel. Chambered for .38 S&W. Factory referred to this model as .38/32 revolver. Also built on small I-frame and later changed to J-frame in 1960. Discontinued in 1974. One engineering change.

.22 Long Rifle. Introduced in 1936 as .22-32 Kit Gun. Has a 2- or 4-in. barrel, round or square butt and adjustable sights. Underwent several modifications before it reached its present form. S&W modernized this revolver in 1953, with addition of a coil mainspring and micro-click sights. Model 34 is built on this improved version. Revolver is a .32 Hand Ejector chambered for .22 rimfire. Built on I-frame until 1960, when changeover to improved J-frame occurred. The -1 behind model number indicates this variation. Offered blued or nickel-plate. Add premiums for early variations: Model 34 (no dash) add 50%; Model 34-1 add 40%. Two engineering changes.

A square-butt, 6-in. barreled version of .22/32 Hand Ejector. Known prior to 1957 as .22/32 Target. Underwent same changes as Model 34. Discontinued in 1973.

Known as Chief's Special. Introduced in 1950. Built on J-frame. Chambered for .38 Special cartridge. Holds 5 shots. Has a 2- or 3-in. barrel. Initially offered in a round butt. In 1952, a square-butt version was released. Finished in blue or nickel-plate, with checkered walnut grips. A 3-in. heavy barrel was first produced in 1967, and became standard in 1975. The 2-in. barrel dropped from production in 1993. Ten engineering changes.

Similar to Model 36, with exception only offered with 2-in. barrel. Rosewood grips and soft carrying case, standard. Weight 20 oz.

Introduced in 1952 as Chief's Special Airweight. Initially had an alloy frame and cylinder. In 1954, following many complaints regarding damaged revolvers, cylinders were made of steel. Barrel lengths, finishes and grip options on Airweight are the same as on standard Chief Special. In 1957, Model 37 designation was adopted. These early alloy frame and cylinder revolvers were designed to shoot only standard velocity .38 Special cartridges. Use of high-velocity ammunition was not recommended by the factory. Note: All 1998 and later production models were rated for +P ammunition. Three engineering changes.

Introduced in 1955 as Airweight Bodyguard. This was a departure from S&W's usual procedure in that the alloy-framed version came first. Chambered for .38 Special and available with 2-in. barrel standard. Although a 3-in. barrel was offered, it is rarely encountered. Frame of Bodyguard is extended to conceal and shroud the hammer, but at the same time allows hammer to be cocked by the thumb. This makes this model an ideal pocket revolver, as it can be drawn without catching on clothing. Available blue or nickel-plated, with checkered walnut grips. Note: All 1998 and later production models were rated for +P ammunition. Three engineering changes.

Introduced in 1952 as Smith & Wesson's 100th Anniversary and appropriately called "Centennial Model." A Safety Hammerless design. Built on J-frame. Features a fully concealed hammer and grip safety. Chambered for .38 Special cartridge. Offered with 2-in. barrel blued or nickel-plate. Grips are checkered walnut. Centennial discontinued in 1974.

Recreation of 5-shot J-frame model. Designed for double-action-only operation, with fully concealed hammer and grip safety. Model 40 has a steel frame; weight 19 oz. Model 42 has an alloy frame; weight 13 oz.

Identical in configuration to Model 40, except furnished with an aluminum alloy frame. Discontinued in 1974. Editors Note: First 37 pre-Model 42s were manufactured with aluminum alloy cylinders. Weight 11.1/4 oz., compared to 13 oz. for standard model. Balance of Model 42 production was with steel cylinders. Add 300% for extremely rare aluminum alloy cylinder variation. Circa 1952-1974. Model 42-1 reintroduced in 2009.

Produced in 1992, but not catalogued. Chambered for .38 Special. Fitted with 2-in. barrel. Frame is alloy. Marked "MOD 042." No grip safety. Blued finish. Weight about 16 oz. Supposedly a reworked Model 642 "blemish gun" distributed through a national wholesaler.

Built on J-frame. Chambered for .22 rimfire. Offered in round or square butt, with checkered walnut grips. Has 3.5-in. barrel, adjustable sights and blued or nickel-plated. Frame made of aluminum alloy. Except for this, identical to Model 34 or .22/.32 Kit Gun. This model has a rare 2" barrel configuration as well as very limited production in .22 WRM. Introduced in 1954; discontinued in 1974.

8-round .22 LR.

A special purpose K-frame Military & Police Model. Chambered for .22 rimfire. Designed as a training revolver for police departments and U.S. Postal Service. Manufactured in limited quantities between 1948 and 1957. In 1963, production abruptly began and ended again. There were 500 of these revolvers released on a commercial basis, but they are rarely encountered.

Introduced in 1959. Identical to Model 17 or K-22, except chambered for .22 WRM cartridge. Offered in 4-, 6- and 8.375-in. barrel lengths. Blued finish. Discontinued in 1986. Reintroduced in 2010. Seven engineering changes.

Single-/double-action K-frame revolver chambered in .22 Magnum rimfire (.22 MRF). Features include bright blue steel frame and cylinder, checkered wood grips, 4- or 6-in. barrel, adjustable Patridge-style sights.

Introduced in 1959. Identical in configuration to Model 38, except frame is made of steel. Three engineering changes, discontinued 1997.

Five-shot J-frame revolver in .38 Special with adjustable sights. Chiefs Special Target models were introduced in 1955 before S&W began numbering its revolver models in approximately 1957 (see listing for Model 36 Chiefs Special Target). In 1962, the factory began calling this configuration the Model 50, but production guns were still stamped Model 36 until about 1973 when the model marking was changed to Model 50. However, some production runs of Chiefs Special Target Models continued to be marked Model 36, including batches in 1973, 1975 (213 3” heavy barrel Model 36-1s), 1976 (three 2” nickel models), and 1989 (2,000 satin blue 3” full-lug Model 36-6s).
